I was wondering why they didn’t breed for flavor as well as color. I found the problem near the end of the article.

But were the genetically engineered tomatoes more flavorful? Because Department of Agriculture regulations forbid the consumption of experimental produce, no one tasted them.

They were doing experiment to learn about plants, not trying to create a variety for mass production and consumption, but still, that seems like some pretty important information.

These are good.

Tomato, Mr. Stripey
Pretty, sweet-tasting 1 lb. fruits with a high sugar content.
Mr. Stripey’s mild, sweet-tasting fruits have a high sugar content and grow to over 1 lb. each. Pretty and luscious, the tomato has rich yellow undertones covered with pinkish-red striping. Indeterminate. Harvest about 80 days from transplant.

We can Heirloom tomatoes here, but they are more expensive.

But absolutely worth the higher cost.
